The Essay of Warren Buffet

Author: W. Buffet
ISBN: 0-071-35481-6
Format: Paperback
Date Published: April 11, 2001
Buffett, the Bard of Omaha, is a genuine American folk hero, if folk heroes are allowed to build fortunes worth upward of $15 billion. He's great at homespun metaphor, but behind those catchy phrases is a reservoir of financial acumen that's generally considered the best of his generation. For example, in an essay on CEO stock options, he writes, "Negotiating with one's self seldom produces a barroom brawl." This is his way of saying that an executive who can give himself compensation totally disproportionate to his performance surely will. There are uncountable gems of financial wisdom to be harvested from these essays, taken from the annual reports he writes for Berkshire Hathaway, his holding company. Just to pick one more, here's a now-famous line about those he competes with when making stock-market investments: "What could be more advantageous in an intellectual contest--whether it be chess, bridge, or stock selection--than to have opponents who have been taught that thinking is a waste of energy?"

While Buffett has a policy of seldom commenting on stocks he owns--he feels public pronouncements will only lead to the public's expectation of more public pronouncements, and he likes to keep his cards close to his vest--he loves to discuss the principles behind his investments. These come primarily from Ben Graham, under whom Buffett studied at Columbia University and for whom he worked in the 1950s. First among them is the idea that price is what you pay and value is what you get--and if you're a smart investor, the first will always be less than the second. In that sense, the value of the lessons learned from Buffett's Essays could be far greater than the book's price.

  • This book alone truly offers that clarity of vision.
  • Buffett is the keenest observer of the workings of modern finance and businesses alive today. He blows away the smoke and mirrors, and lays out the truth underlying how the business systems actually work.

The Strategy-Focused Organization:

Author: R. Kaplan, D. Norton
ISBN: 1-578-51250-6
Format: Hardcover
Date Published:
In their previous book, The Balanced Scorecard, Robert Kaplan and David Norton unveiled an innovative "performance management system" that any company could use to focus and align their executive teams, business units, human resources, information technology, and financial resources on a unified overall strategy--much as businesses have traditionally employed financial management systems to track and guide their general fiscal direction.  In The Strategy-Focused Organization, Kaplan and Norton explain how companies like Mobil, CIGNA, and Chemical Retail Bank have effectively used this approach for nearly a decade, and in the process present a step-by-step implementation outline that other organizations could use to attain similar results.  Their book is divided into five sections that guide readers through development of a completely individualized plan that is created with "strategy maps" (graphical representations designed to clearly communicate desired outcomes and how they are to be achieved), then infused throughout the enterprise and made an integral part of its future.  In several chapters devoted to the latter, for example, the authors show how their models have linked long-term strategy with day-to-day process for doing so, monitoring progress, and initiating corrective actions if necessary

The Strategy Focused Organization is a great example of how practical management concepts grounded in solid research grow in usefulness.  History will juedge this to be one of the most important books on strategy ever written because it bridges the chasm between concept and implementation.
Every manager should have this book

The HR Scorecard

Author: B. Becker, M. Huselid, D. Ulrich
ISBN: 1-578-51136-4
Format: Hardcover
Date Published:
Providing the tools and systems required for leading a "measurement managed" HR architecture, this important book heralds the emergence of human resources as a strategic powerhouse in today's organizations.

Three experts in the field outline a powerful measurement system that highlights the indisputable role HR can play as both a prime source of sustainable competitive advantage and a key driver of value creation.  They draw from an ongoing study of nearly 3.000 firms to outline a seven-step process they call an HR SCORECARD, specifically designed to embed human resources systems within a firm's overall strategy and manage the HR architecture as a strategic asset.  Building on the proven Balanced Scorecard model, they also show how to link HR's results to measures-such as profitability and shareholder value-that line managers and senior executive will understand and respect.

The authors argue that human resource's strategic role begins with designing an HR architecture-the HR function, the HR system, and strategic employee behaviors-that relentlessly emphasizes the reinforces and implementation of the firm's strategy.  Using eompelling examples from a variety of leading companies, they explain how to develop and implement an HR Scorecard in order to both manage the HR architecture as a strategic asset, as well as measure the contribution of that asset to firm performance.

A text outlining a powerful measurement system for highlighting the role that human resources plays as a source of competitive advantage and a driver of value creation in a company.  Builds on the proven Balanced Scorecard model, showing how to link HR's results to measures that gain respect such as profitability and shareholder value.

The Art of Possibility

Author: R. Zander, B. Zander
ISBN: 0--875-84770-6
Format: Paperback
Date Published: September 2000
The lure of this book's promise starts with the assumption in its title, Possibility--that big, all-encompassing, wide-open-door concept--is an art?  Well, who doesn't want to be a skilled artist, whether in the director's chair, the boardroom, on the factory floor, or even just in dealing with life's everyday situations?  Becoming an artist, however, requires discipline, and what the authors of The Art of Possibility offer is a set of practices designed to 'initiate a new approach to current conditions, based on uncommon assumptions about the nature of the world."

If that sounds a little too airy-fairy for youk don't be put off; this is no mere self-improvement book, with a wimpy mandate to transform its readers into" nicer" people.  Instead, it's a collection of illustrations and advice that suggests a way to change your entire outlook of life and, in the process, open up a new realm of possibility.

  • Packed with examples of personal and professional interactions, the book presents complex ideas on perception and recognition in a readable, useable style.
  • Provides insight as well as inspiration into leadership
